LONDON, Ontario (July 2, 2010) – Kate Megna scored a goal and assisted on another to lead the Chicago Red Eleven to a 3-1 win over the London Gryphons Friday evening at North London Stadium.

With the win, the Red Eleven (7-1-2) clinched a berth into the W-League playoffs later this month. CRE also has a hold on first place in the Midwest Division with 23 points, six ahead of the second-place Buffalo Flash (5-0-2).

The Flash has played three fewer games than Chicago, but the Red Eleven can clinch a division crown with a win at Buffalo July 10. CRE closes out the regular season on a road trip through upstate New York and at Cleveland July 11.

Megna got the scoring started in the first half and gave the Red Eleven a 1-0 lead heading into the break. She got an assist on her fourth goal of the season from Kara Kabellis.

Early in the second half, Megna set up the eventual game-winner off a corner kick. Her cross found Danielle Kot, who finished far post to make it a 2-0 contest. It was the central defender’s second goal of the season off a corner kick.

London struck back just three minutes later and threatened to tie the game late in regulation, but the Red Eleven withstood the attack and added an insurance goal off the foot of the team’s leading scorer, Sarah Campbell.

Julia Victor hooked up with Campbell for her sixth goal of the season in the 88th minute to seal the victory.
